The story of Son Doong cave

Son Doong cave in the Phong Nha - Ke Bang Nationtal Park, located in Son Trach commune, Bo Trach district, Quang Binh province, Vietnam. So far, this cave has been considered as the largest cave in the world.

1. Son Doong was discovered because of… a rain

Son Doong cave was discovered in 1991 by a farmer named Ho Khanh, he worked in the forest at that time.

On a normal day going to work, there was a heavy rain, Ho Khanh was afraid of flood, so he went to look for shelter. Incidentally, the shelter that he found.... was Son Doong cave!

2. Son Doong was missed in ...15 years

At the time Ho Khanh discovered Son Doong cave, he did not know the value of it, that it is the largest cave in the world. Not long after his trip, he quit working in the forest and went back to work on his own farm.

So this cave was still in the dark until 15 years after, in 2006, there was an expedition from the British Royal Association came to search for new caves in Phong Nha - Ke Bang, Ho Khanh then brought his story to them. So a trip has been started to look for the cave…

3. Son Doong was not displayed on Google Earth...

However, the trip was not completely successful. All that was in Khanh's memory is a large cave, blowing wind all the time.
Even using the intelligent software Google Search, and modern equipment, the expedition did not find the Son Doong cave until 2009, Ho Khanh officially rediscovered Son Doong cave.

4. Son Doong can be an airport due to it’s large area

According to geologists, Son Doong cave was formed since around 2-5 million years ago, when a river flowed through limestone area that was buried along a fault line. The water eroded it and created a giant tunnel.
The size of Son Doong cave is very large with at least 5 km length, equal to the capacity of about 68 Boeing 777 aircrafts.
But according to scientists, the actual size of it may be even larger , since the most modern facilities of today has not fully explored the real length of this cave.

5. Son Doong cave is called "The Great Wall of Vietnam"

Inside of the largest cave in the world, the experts discovered that there are many positions with enormous size. A picture taken by photographer Peter in 5/2010 recorded a part of cave that has 91,44m width and high arch near 243,84m - absolutely could contain a 40 floors bulding of New York.
Thanks to grandiose size and spectacular scenery, Son Doong is called “The Great Wall of Vietnam”.


6. At Son Doong cave, you can find your own paradise

Not only famous for its giant size but Son Doong cave is also known by a variety of biological landscape.

In the Son Doong cave, explorers discovered a primitive forests with rich vegetation, which has not been any human traces yet. Experts even called this forest as the "Garden of Eden" to honor the perfect beauty of it.

7. Son Doong owns many "pearls" with baseball size

Because of enormous stone stalactite and pearl of cave system, Son Dong owns millions of caving pearls with baseball size.
